Since its initial publication in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic, 'The Great Gatsby' has probably appeared in hundreds of editions, each with a different cover (You can view thumbnails of 25 of them by clicking on 'original image', in the upper right of this page). Very few of these covers have been photographic, and those few that have seem to be gauzy, pastel-palette depictions of Robert Redford look-alikes.
The designer who put this cover together deserves more than the anonymity bestowed upon him or her by Penguin publishers. The Jazz Age fashion shot by George Hoyningen-Huene gives the cover a stark, factual elegance which seems to be lacking in many of its over-romanticized brethren. The beauty of this cover resides in the fact that the image, while graphically compelling and a bit surreal, can also be imagined as Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, staring blankly out at the Long Island Sound from West Egg. gorgeous, powerful, speaks volumes, PEFECT! just did a report comparing the novel to the 1974 film and used this cover to contrast the depth of the book to the emptiness of the movie
